This is my first time here. I used to drive an 850 T5-R and my wife's family is full of miscellaneous Volvos, but it has been a while since we had one (I have been a long-time older-BMW guy). We are picking up a 2005 V50 (S40 wagon) from a friend next week and I have been trying to find a decent service manual for it anywhere. I understand that the VIDA/DICE combo is like the Volkswagen VCDS hex-can reader (we have a VW already) and VADIS is the the parts diagram resource. However, it would be great if something factory-like existed, such as the Bentley manuals we've used on the VW/BMW. I have googled my heart out. Am I missing something here, or is there no decent service manual for the S40/V50?

Or are the aforementioned resources pretty much it? You aren't missing anything. There is nothing even remotely as nice as a Ross-Tech unit & Bentley manual.

I'm an Audi/VW guy too. Get yourself a copy of. These cover all the repair & parts info for virtually all Volvos. They are the same as the factory issued ones but hacked to work without connecting to Volvo Central. A bit of a pain too install & learn but well worth your time. Best to use a 'spare' computer you have about. Browse all the listings & find a version that matches your software & hardware.

Down the road you can always buy a DICE unit as well. This will read all the Volvo specific codes & allow you to do some calibrations.

It will NOT allow you to update software or the likes as you need an official internet connection to Volvo Central for that. Similar to a Ross-Tech but nowhere near as intuitive & feature rich. Volvo has their stuff tied down pretty tight. Im pretty sure there isnt much.maybe a few Haynes manuals featuring P1's with diesel engines.

But hang around here for a little and i think you'll find most of what you need. I remember when swedespeed was down for a few days due to some server errors or something, i learned quickly how valuable a resource this place is.

B5254T2 2.5T B5254T3 from a P1 T5 i couldnt tell you whats different about them, and i dont know how much cross-referencing them would help with repairs. But they look different and Im personally curious what are some of the dif. If anyone knows. Thanks for confirming what I realize is a massive deficit of the producers/publishers and an opportunity for the enthusiast community to document basic technical details. In the BMW world we had it all at our fingertips. I'll have to pull up the 2.5T documentation from other bodies that utilized that drivetrain.

2005 XC90 comes to mind, since we looked at those too. The V50 I am purchasing has the T5/AWD Haldex setup. 70k miles, new tires and timing belt. You won't find anything on the modern Volvo cars.

Last good paper manual was the 240 era. Like Brown said, there are some Hayes manuals about for the euro cars but a Hayes is no Bentley. You will need to get VIDA running on a computer.

There are no substitutes. While this community is nowhere near as large as the BMW one you will in fact find virtually everything here.

Maybe not perfectly documented with pretty pictures but it's here. Raleigh-Durham area.

Also, we did indeed buy the car, so at this point I'm just going to start finding resources. I was curious in particular about whether the differential/transmission/haldex unit needs any preventative maintenance.

We're at 72k miles and I am a big proponent of fluid changes - I believe it's the ticket to 200k. Try Harrison Automotive ADDRESS: 300 West Johnson St., Raleigh, NC 27603 PHONE: 919-831-0208 Andy / Lisa HOURS: Monday through Thursday 8AM - 5:30PM / Friday 8AM - 5PM They are excellent and honest.
