I assume this is a manual tranny? In most there are centering springs that help you go from gear to gear and find neutral without a problem.

I've seen them broken or just weakened but considering they are buried inside the transmission housing, you might want to just live with it until the time for synchros or other work is needed. Heck, most of us started as novices but some decent tools, an after-market service manual from Chilton or Haynes, knuckles that don't bleed easy, an anal attitude toward cleanliness relative to the innards of machinery, and a few choice words not meant for childrens' ears, will make you a practiced shade-tree mechanic. Follow the brake pedal up the metal arm until you see a little switch pressed against the metal arm.

When the brakes are pressed, the switch button extends and unlocks the shift lever and turns on the brake lights. It is common for a little plastic piece to deteriorate and break away, causing the brake lights to stay on and can damage the shift lock solenoid. Attached is a photo of the brake switch where it contacts the pedal arm. There is a little snap cover beside the shifter. You can pry it open with a little flathead screwdriver and insert a thin object inside to release the shift lock and get out of gear until you find the fix.
