Katolight 50kw Generator Manuals

04.02.2020

Just aquied a generator Katolight Genrator for $500. It is a 50KW unit. There is a tag on the main unit that says KVH 18.6 and then on the bell there is another tag that has 50KW. Hi there, I'm guessing that that is a 18.7 kva alternator; the other numbers on the plate should tell you the voltage, number of phases and so on. The bit that you call the 'bell' is (I think) the DC Exciter that drives the field windings of the main alternator.

  2. 25kw Generator

It is a self contained DC generator; I'm not sure what the 50KW refers to, perhaps it is the same unit that was fitted to all alternators up to 50KW or something like that, not sure. There are plenty of more knowledgeable folk on the forum so hopefully one of them can help more. KVA is 'apparent power' and equals the sum of kW or 'real' power that does work in an inductive machine and the 'reactive' power or kVAR that magnetizes the inductive machine.

The important bit to understand is that the maximum voltage of the AC wave and the maximum amperage do not always happen at the same instant so the voltage V times the amperage A which is called VA or kVA doesn't always accurately describe the amount of AC power that's being delivered. With an inductive load, there is a significant offset between the peak amperage and the peak voltage so power factor is less than 1.0. With a resistive AC load, the peaks happen at the same instant so power factor is equal to 1.0 and VA describes the power being delivered accurately. Most times the load mix on a set has some resistive and some inductive appliances etc so power factor usually is less than 1. With DC, there is no variation in voltage over time so amperage is also constant, and V x A describes the total power that's being delivered quite accurately.

For the AC alternator, the load may have/most likely has a power factor less than 1.0 so the sets are commonly built with a generator that has a higher kVA capability than the kW of the engine they put on it. For the typical generator set rated power factor 0.8, An inductive load like an electric motor may have such a poor power factor that the amperage limit of the generator is reached or exceeded long before the engine is fully loaded. A resistive AC load like a light bulb or a resistance heating element will have a power factor of 1.0 so the engine may overload before the amperage limit is reached. For the DC exciter, kW and kVA are equal because there's no inductive quality to the DC load. Anyhow, the exciter has a tag showing it's capability and the main alternator has a tag showing it's capability. Are you sure the exciter tag doesn't say 5.0kW instead of 50?

The whole thing looks more like a 15 kW/18.75 kVA set with a 5.0kW exciter than a 50kW set with an 18.75 kW exciter. Thanks for the reply jim I just ran out side and cleaned the tags off and it says KW 50 Now there is a pit, possibly a period just in front of the 50 Could it Be.50?
